## Advisor Style & Mentorship On this category, I rate him a 4/5.
Dr. Eswara is a good advisor and will make time for his students upon request. He's a bit more "hands off" and allows students to choose their own path from a list of projects that fit in his lab, but also allows students to bring projects to him freely. His style works very well for me, but it might not be ideal for someone who wants a very structured PhD program.
## Expectations for PhD Students On this category, I rate him a 5/5.
Dr. Eswara makes his expectatitons very clear and doesn't push his students beyond the fourty hour work week. He's known for taking time off himself, especially to go on cruises during which he has limited connectivitiy, and thus indirectly encourages his students to take time off as well. (He directly encourages this too, but also leads by example.) He works himself hard, but understands that that shouldn't be the expectatation for his students.
## Funding & Support On this category, I rate him a 4/5.
It depends a bit on who we're talking about when we say "funding" here. If we're talking about Dr. Eswara, I'd rate him a 3/5 for getting funding just because he's a relatively new PI. His lab is moderately sized and he has a few significant grants. I think this will increase in the near future. If we're talking about how Dr. Eswara funds his students, I'd rate him a 5/5. No one takes his students off teaching assistant duties faster that I know off. He is very quick to support his students and feels like this is best for the student and the lab.
## Research I'm not going to rate this category because it's too opinionated. Dr. Eswara studies cell division and sporulation in *Bacillus subtilis* and looks at a few important proteins in *Staphylococcus aureus*. His lab is known for "basic science" and understanding the fundamentals of bacteria. If you're interested in virulence, he can work with you to find you a good topic, but if you're interested in things closer to human health, like human/pathogen interactions, this probably isn't the lab for you. He finds the answers to his scientific questions primarily via genetics and microscopy.
## Lab Culture On this category, I rate the lab a 5/5.
Currently, the lab culture is excellent. There's a feeling of camaraderie among peers and it's very easy to ask a favor if you're not available to finish an experiment. While this could theoretically change with time, I think this is fostored by the PI with informal gatherings such as retreats to his house for Halloween parties and just random gatherings - he makes it easy to become friends with your peers.
