I was a postdoc in his lab for 5 years.
    ## Advisor Style & Mentorship
There was no mentorship at all. He is from Tim Mitchison's lab, but I am not sure if Tim is like that as well. Firstly, he expects his students and postdocs will go to him and talk about science all the time. But as a postdoc/student, very soon you will find him being a sarcastic person, who derides every other PI's work, saying they are not doing good science. If he is a genius like Richard Feynman, that's fine, but he is not. He is in the decline phase of his scientific career. When you propose your ideas in lab meeting or personal meetings, he just trashes them, claiming your idea is not science or it's trash etc. But he is not able to give any suggestions that could lead to progress, and his dislike towards you grows if you do not find him to talk / ignore his suggestions. In the first few years I fell into this trap and wasted a hefty amount of time because he just keep pointing you to the wrong direction. In the end I just stopped finding him to talk except lab meeting because he cannot give any constructive ideas. And you know what, I made a major breakthrough in the last year in the lab, following my own ideas.

Another big con about him is a lack of leadership. As a leader in a group, you cannot show personal preference for certain people in the lab, and ignore the other guys. That happens even after I left, and certainly leave a psychological impact on the ignored personell.

    ## Expectations for PhD Students
I can only speak of my postdoc experience. I got a fellowship from MSKCC for 3 years, which was really nice. His expectation is that you will get your own funding within 2 years and publish within 3 years. I didn't achieve that, so 1 year before my Fellowship expired, he said I have to leave and was embarassed as I told him my time wasn't up yet.

    ## Funding & Support
During my years it was fine.

    ## Research
Terrible. He cannot give any good ideas. For any newcomer: don't even trust any his ideas because it's usually crap. Can waste you 1-2 years because he is overoptimistic of his idea and too egoistic to admit he is wrong.

    ## Lab Culture
Overall it's ok, but most times people are suffering. Back then before COVID we had weekly Friday beer hours, everyone was complaining about how ridiculous he was. You should trust the crowd: if everybody is complaining about the boss, something is wrong about the PI.

No, I don't recommend this PI.
