Honestly, just save yourself the trouble and join a different lab. He has had at least 3 graduate students leave his lab in the last 3 years and he is just an awful advisor. He is predatory and likes to get international students hooked in, and then makes you feel like you are trapped in his lab and have no options. In reality, you can always just leave and switch labs, but he doesn't want you to know that. According to one student, and from my own experience, he treats his students like slaves and gives barely any respect for their views or thoughts. You have to do things his way, and if you don't he will make you feel like a piece of 💩. He reaches out to students via email before their admission, as he did in my case, and makes them feel like if they don't join his lab, they won't get into MIT. Inevitably the student joins his lab and then quickly realizes the kind of environment they are working in and who he really is. For the love of your fellow student, please do not join this professor's lab; even if you love acoustics, there are so many other professors/labs you could join such as in WHOI or other profs who you will have a much better experience with. This professor has been acting this way for way too long now and gotten away with it. Choosing a good PI is probably more important than working in your preferred subject area; science is science regardless of where you work.
