# **Advisor Style & Mentorship**
**# How often does the PI meet with you? 1:1 or all together? Daily guidance by PI or post-doc:**
One lab meeting for all lab members every week and a 1:1 meeting weekly or biweekly, depending on how satisfied he is to the student. No post-doc is in the group since Dr. Hu think having post-doc is wasting money.
**# Do you consider the PI more of a ‘hands-on’ or ‘hands-off’ advisor?**
Definitely "hands-on". If your project is closely related to the project then he will ask about ur progress nearly everytime he catches you.
**## Is the PI fairly accessible to you? Is the PI reachable and responsive to your questions? How long does it take for the PI to reply to students' emails?**
Yes, you can find him in his office 10-6 in his office. He usually replies email in 2 hours.

# Expectations for PhD Students
**How many academic papers does the PI expect PhD students to publish before graduation?**
No hard limitation for graduation. But Dr. Hu's lab only does organic chemistry so the papers are often published way later than the chemistry and assay part is finished since a lot in vivo or in vitro studies are made by other labs.
**Does the PI expect students to work late or on weekends? Or only before deadlines?**
Yes, Dr. Hu expect students to work 7 days a week, although, according to his word, it is ok to watch a movie during the weekend.
**How long does it usually take for PhD students to graduate in your lab? How does it compare with the department average?**
At least 6 years. Department average is around 5 years

# Funding & Support
**Are you financially supported by the PI? Do you often worry about your funding and have to search for other financial sources (TA/grader)?**
The first two years is guranteed for a TAship from the department. From the third year the students have to find TAship from other departments or getting supported from Dr. Hu (the wage is much lower)

**Is the PI supportive of other aspects of students’ lives? Such as Visa problems and living difficulties during the pandemic.**
Dr. Hu cares about every students in every aspects as long as your progress is not satisfying to him

# Lab Culture
**How do you describe the culture of your lab? Do members interact frequently in academics and in life?**
In recent 5 years only one students join the lab and was suggested to transfer to master since Dr. Hu think the student did not commit enough time on research. Students in the lab fear the PI.
**Will it be acceptable/encouraged to intern in industries during the summer?**
No, summer is the time you don't need to TAship and you can spend all your time on reasearch.
**How often do students drop out of the lab? What are the reasons? How is the rotation retention in this lab?**
Lots of students transfered to another lab or master program. Most of the reason is Dr. Hu is not satisfied with the commitement of the student have on the project even when the students spent 10 hours a day in the lab.
# Research
**Do you think that your research field in the lab is promising? Is the PI an expert in this field? Does your research topic change frequently?**
Dr. Hu is one of the few professors working on the similar compounds. However, this field is slightly different from typical medicinal chemistry project since the binding mode of the compond is different from substrate with enzymes, yet Dr. Hu is still using the same ideology trying to find out the SAR for the drug.

**Does the PI tend to give students projects or have them select their own? How much freedom do you have in selecting your own projects?**
You have to work on the project assigned to you unless you can make a proper proposal to pursuade him to support you to work on the project.

No, I don't recommend this PI.
