## Advisor Style & Mentorship I have been in the Shi lab for almost my entire undergraduate career. Dr. Shi is definitely one of the most caring, supportive PI that anyone can ask for. In the beginning, she provided me a lot of 1:1 training on wet-lab experiments, data analysis and data acquisition with imaging modalities in the lab. After gaining familarity with the lab, Dr. Shi gave me a lot of freedom to conduct my own research. From time to time, I would check in with her on my research progress. She is definitely accessible to her students almost any time of the day. ## Expectations for PhD Students As an undergraduate student, I am not familiar with her expectations for Ph.D. students. However, I am sure that there are some overlaps. You are expected to conduct research independently, seek alternatives to your problems, and communicate regularly with Dr. Shi. ## Funding & Support The lab is very well funded because every year, Dr. Shi will send more than 1 student in her lab to national/international conferences. These conferences typically cost a lot of money to attend but Dr. Shi affords it all for you. ## Research Dr. Shi is a pioneer of bioorthogonal labelling stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and multiphoton fluorescence (MPF) imagign to characterize metabolic dynamics in cancer, neurodegeneration, aging, diabetes and more. Each student is free to choose a topic of their interest and pursue it. Dr. Shi will not force a project on you if you don't intend to result fruitful results. ## Lab Culture Everyone is very accessible and supportive of each other. No competition, no toxic behaviors, no bad mouth of each other.
