## Advisor Style & Mentorship Based on my experience, supervision was largely hands-off, with no guidance. Research topics were vague, and trainees were often expected to design and work independently with no scientific input. Interactions tended to focus on publishing rather than mentorship or intellectual development. Career guidance and long-term mentoring were absent. Ambitious projects were proposed without sufficient support, leaving trainees to figure things out on their own. Difficult conversations and disagreements were hard to navigate, and raising concerns or alternative viewpoints could feel uncomfortable and discouraging often leading to conflict. ## Expectations for PhD Students Expectations felt high relative to the level of supervision provided. There was ongoing implicit pressure to work beyond standard hours, including evenings and weekends, and boundaries around personal time were not respected. ## Funding & Support While funding and resources were generally available through institutional or collaborative arrangements, trainees had limited inputs to shape research objectives. Scientific discussions were often vague and confusing. As a result, the availability of resources did not translate into effective academic research. ## Research Limited supervisory engagement and lack of expertise slowed progress and created uncertainty, particularly for early-career researchers. ## Lab Culture The lab environment was tense and lacking in trust. Communication was often inconsistent, with delayed email responses and important discussions occurring through unscheduled calls outside normal working hours rather than timely written communication.
