## Advisor Style & Mentorship
Julian is an excellent PhD supervisor. He provided a lot of help and guidance at the start of the PhD, and was then relatively hands off for the first year. This was quite challenging at times, and I found it very helpful when we started meeting weekly in my second year. During the pandemic we continued to meet weekly virtually and Julian was always available for help. Towards the end of the PhD his support and motivation in helping me finish was outstanding!
## Expectations for PhD Students
Julian expected me to publish during my PhD, however I remember the expectations were pretty flexible and Julian was very fair in adapting expectations to circumstances. I.e. initially I wanted to publish 4 first author papers, and that ended up being 2 due to mental health set-backs, mostly caused by side effects of the pandemic (and perhaps by slightly unrealistic goals!). With Julian's support I was able to publish 2 papers, submit my Thesis within 4 years, and as far as I am aware he has had success with every PhD student finishing.
## Funding & Support
I was financially supported by Julian's STFC grant for the full 3.5 years and by the university during my 3 month extension (due to setbacks with the pandemic). As long as the project was at the top of my priority list, he was very happy for me to engage in other activities such as public engagement. Julian was extremely supportive regarding my mental health set-backs, and provided a lot of support during the pandemic. Unfortunately we only attended one in person conference together before travel was restricted, and I was encouraged to attend a separate conference prior to this. Julian also encouraged me to attend a very helpful week long summer school.
## Research
Julian is an expert in his field and so was very helpful in supporting my research, and asking him questions was intellectually stimulating. The research goals were quite open at the start, as such I had freedom in tailoring the study to my own interests. Authorship was fairly assigned throughout the project.
## Lab Culture
Myself, Julian and my other supervisor met weekly to discuss work and chat casually. These meetings were very helpful and helped with morale during the pandemic. Unfortunately our wider group with shared research interests hardly met, and there were periods in my project where I felt very isolated. This was mainly due to the effects of the pandemic however, and not necessarily the fault of those leading the group.
