## Advisor Style & Mentorship
Chris is an excellent supervisor and I have thoroughly enjoyed learning from him during my PhD. At the start of the PhD he was very welcoming and instilled a lot of enthusiasm in me. Throughout the PhD we would meet with me and my other supervisor at least once a week, and often grab lunch and coffee outside of that - the conversations were always intellectually stimulating, as well as casual and friendly.
Chris was always responsive to emails, and was a mixture of hands on/off at different periods during the PhD. Although how often we communicated was often left down to myself and whenever I needed help - I was always encouraged to think critically and independently.
## Expectations for PhD Students
In my experience, Chris's expectations have been very fair. I was expected to publish, certainly, however I don't recall there being pressure. I would say that I was encouraged to aim for two good papers in my 3 years and 6 months of funding. Once I decided to write up my research, Chris was very effective at being motivating, and I didn't get an unpleasant sense of pressure. Chris also encouraged me to not work evenings and weekends, and to take all of my annual leave.
## Funding & Support
I was not financially supported by Chris as my stipend came from my other supervisor's STFC grant. I had a 3 month funding extension due to the pandemic, however this was provided by the university. Chris was very supportive of academic activities outside of the lab, and we even went to a conference in Greece before the travel restrictions. Public engagement activities and internships were supported also as long as the main project was top of the priority list. It was certainly made clear to me when I was not prioratising correctly. Towards the end of my PhD Chris helped a lot with my job search, and I felt supported right until the PhD finished.
## Research
My research was in an actively debated area, and so the research aspect was very rich, stimulating, and Chris's own research interest and methodology heavily influenced mine due to him being an expert in the field. As the project was emerging, I was encouraged to consider my own research interests and questions.
## Lab Culture
Our group with shared research interests was quite small and as a collective we would almost never meet. If I had any criticism, it would be this, as there were periods during the PhD where things felt quite isolating. The pandemic played a massive factor however, so it was not necessarily the fault of those leading the group. In regards to my particular project however, Chris was determined to meet weekly with myself and my other supervisor, and we would spend a lot of time chatting and having friendly conversation - this certainly helped with morale and the isolation!
