I got my PhD with she being my PI. Personally I pursued postdoc in biology for 5 years after graduation, I guess my comment should be quite objective because I encountered other PIs. ## Advisor Style & Mentorship Pros: A humane person: she doesn't treat grad student as a tool. I observe how she handle grad students from different backgrounds. She usually try to understand how each person's strengths/ interests are, and try to accomodate and bring out the most out of her students
Cons: As she gets upward in academia, she got more into adminstrative side of the university. So expect to see her not so often. However, I do see that she always try (at least she care) to talk to her student whenever she has time to visit the lab.
## Expectations for PhD Students Can't say much about that, as overall in Maryland physics there are very little expectation for PhD students.
## Funding & Support Pros & Cons: 1. Lack of funding at times: Maryland is not a big school and doing biology in a physics department could be tricky. Her funding ran dry some point during my PhD and we had to be teaching assistant for 1-2 semesters. This is a minor point though, because I think teaching is in itself a great experience. I guess this problem should be lessened at the time I wrote this review, because she has ascended in status and I saw her getting from NSF and NIH and was doing pretty well
## Research Pros: good communicator, a "people" person. She likes to talk to different people, and more importantly, she can find the appropriate collaboration to push science forward. This is a huge credit if you want to make progress in science, because there are so many things you do not know about.
Cons: scientific knowledge: she is not Albert Einstein or Richard Feynman in biophysics. So, don't expect her to read all the most current papers out there and know everything. Instead, you have to take the wheel for yourself and she is more than happy to let to realize your potential to make scientific progress
## Lab Culture Back in my time, every one just work on their own stuff, but we all help each others out. Lab meeting can be sparse she is getting busy with more administrative work, but overall I like the lab environment.
